Blind volunteer now working for Sight Support
John has been a valued volunteer for several years and has supported our charity by providing telephone support to some of our housebound clients. John is fantastic! – every week he catches the bus from Blaenavon to our resource centre in Pontypool where he telephones vulnerable blind people to have a chat, letting them know we are there if they need help. Without the support of people like John we could not provide this vital service.
In a previous life John was a Leisure Services Manager for Torfaen County Borough Council and although he says that he does not miss the work he missed the company so volunteering helped him too. John’s eye condition is hereditary and has affected him since his late 30s.
In February, John joined the Sight Support team co-ordinating the 'ring-around' service. He also organises the issuing of radios to qualifying blind people under the "wireless for the blind scheme". Another part of his role is helping with the transport arrangements for volunteers and he is also supporting our team here in fundraising events. What did we ever do without him!
Sight Support does what it says – provides vital support for blind people so that they can continue to enjoy life to the full.
