Volunteering Opportunities with Sight Cymru
Volunteering is a chance to meet new people, develop new skills and gain experience with the knowledge that you are respected and valued for your involvement. People who volunteer are a vital resource of our charity and we are unable to operate without them. We have volunteers from all age groups and who help us with all sorts of tasks from administrative duties, transporting our clients to appointments at hospitals to visiting people who find it difficult to get out and about.
Our volunteers say they gain as much as they give!
What special qualities do I need to be a volunteer?
None - just a little spare time, an open friendly nature, adaptability, patience and a sense of humour.
How much time do I have to give?
As much or as little as you can - it is your decision - two hours a month or two days a week - all is equally valued.
What will I get out of it?
Satisfaction of helping others, making new friends and valuable use of spare time.
How could I help?
- Befriending
- Driving
- Administrative Duties
- Leisure activities
- Fund raising
- Clubs
Do volunteers receive any training?
Yes, all our volunteers receive a full day awareness training course and continued support thereafter.

Fundraising
We need to raise at least £150,000 every year in order to provide the services that we do. We raise this money through a variety of fund-raising events, donations, collections but we are always on the look out for new innovative ideas.
If you think you might have a good idea or like to organise an event with friends, neighbours or work colleagues, then please contact us.
For further information please contact us on : 01495 763650 or visit the Contact us page.
Some of the things we do at Sight Cymru to generate funds.
Collection Boxes
If you have time and feel you can raise some money by organising a particular event we would really value if you can contact us as we can provide you with a collection box. Also, if you have a business or know any local businesses e.g. your local pub landlord why not ask if they can let you leave our Collection Box on the counter for customers to contribute. Every little helps.
Individual Donations
If you would like to make a regular donation to Sight Cymru, whether monthly, quarterly or annually, visit our donations page by clicking this link. Options are available to make a one off donation or a regular standing order.
If you are a UK resident and taxpayer, please remember that if you give through Gift Aid, it means that for every £1 you donate, Sight Cymru receives £1.28, at no extra cost to you. All you need to do is print our Gift Aid declaration form which you can download here and then send it back to us at the address on the form. We can then reclaim the tax that you have already paid on any donations you send us.
Legacies
A legacy is a gift left in a will, and is a practical and tax efficient way for someone to continue to support Sight Cymru after their death to help others who are visually impaired. The legacy might be a specific sum of money, object or piece of property, or the residual estate (what is left over after family, friends and other organisations have received specified legacies, and debts have been cleared.)
If you think you may like to include Sight Cymru in your Will, contact your solicitor and ask that Sight Cymru be included in the list of bequests in your will. This is our official name as recognised by the Charities Commission and our Registered Charity number is: 214215. If you have already written your will and you have kindly identified ‘Gwent Association for the Blind’ as a potential beneficiary, the money will still reach us, as that name continues to be protected on our behalf.
However, if you have identified ‘the blind’ or ‘blind association’ or similar, we would be happy to help you change it as it is possible the money would not go to where you had intended.
We would just like to remind our friends and supporters that we are not part of RNIB or Guide Dogs and that ALL of our money is spent in Wales and not in the rest of the UK as tends to be the case with the larger national charities’
MissionFish
MissionFish helps charities to raise money on eBay. It enables eBay sellers to give some or all of their sale proceeds to their favourite charity, and we are a registered charity on their site. More information can be found at www.missionfish.org
